SODIUM REACTS VIOLENTLY WITH WATER
Phenolphthalein Shows Resulting Alkalinity.
Sodium, an alkali metal, dropped in water forms hydrogen gas and an alkali solution of sodium hydroxide. This is a single replacement reaction. 2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) -> 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)
