An Instrument That Measures Atmospheric Pressure
Torricelli immersed a tube, sealed at one end, into a reservoir of mercury. Air pressure forced the mercury up into the tube, well above the container level. As shown in this model, the tube must be at least 76 cm to reflect standard sea-level pressure.
