Left: the Cu2+ ion in CuSO4(aq) acts as a Lewis Acid. Center: the addition of the Ligand (NH3)2- begins the conversion of the pale blue [Cu(H2O)4]2+ ion to the deep blue [Cu(NH3)4]2+ ion. Right: deep blue [Cu(NH3)4]2+ ion. Complex formations change oxidation & reduction rates of the metal.
