IONIZING SMOKE DETECTOR
Radioactive Source Ionizes Charged Air Particles
(close-up) A radioactive source ionizes charged air particles between two electrodes. When smoke particles enter the chamber they attract the ions and reduce the current. A microchip responds to the reduced current by activating an alarm.
