TOLLEN'S SILVER MIRROR TEST FOR ALDEHYDES
(3 of 7)
Presence Shown By Metallic Silver Precipitation
The silver ion is complexed with ammonia to form Ag(NH3)2+ (the Tollen's reagent). When the silver is reduced to metal by the aldehyde (dextrose) it precipitates out as a silver mirror on the reaction vessel.
