A supersaturated solution of sugar, water, and food coloring is poured into a beaker in preparation for the crystallization of rock candy. The saturation ratio is 3 cups of sugar to 1 cup water. A weighted string is lowered into this supersaturated sugar solution in preparation for the crystallization of rock candy.
Sugar crystals begin to grow noticeably 24 hours after string is placed into the supersaturated sugar solution.
